    OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGY OF THE IMPACT PROJECT
    The primary objectives of the impact project are to design, construct and test rear underride guard structures for trucks, trailers and semi trailers and to present solutions to government authorities.

    Highlighting the problem and making society aware of the mortal threat hidden in the rear ends of heavy vehicles are objectives being carried out simultaneously.

    Many accidents could be avoided with better rear conspicuity, and if not, most people could be saved, with less severe injuries, if correct rear underride guards were available. Therefore, improvement of rear end conspicuity is also strongly recommended.

    CLEAR OBJECTIVES: TO SAVE  THOUSANDS OF LIVES PER YEAR...

    ...from many avoidable collisions with the rear ends of trucks, preserving life by introducing effective underride guards!

    FUTURE OBJECTIVES:

    To design, construct and test side and front underride guards for trucks and rear underride guards for buses.

    BASIC STRATEGY

    In order to press the government and awaken the judicial system, the media and society to this problem, a campaign was started in 1994, showing photos of the almost useless existing "underride guards" and of real accidents where the guillotine effect played the main role.

    The strategy consists of:

    • Designing and testing of effective underride guards.
    • Presentations at Brazilian and international congresses and safety seminars.
    • Publishing of reports in newspapers and magazines.
    • Radio and television interviews.
    • Creation of this web site.
    • Two denunciations were made to the Brazilian Federal Attorney for Citizens Rights.
    • Three other denunciations were also made on the initiative of the State Attorney.
    • Sending of a detailed project to the Brazilian National Congress, in order to create another battle front.
    • Participating in the committee which is elaborating a Brazilian standard for underride guards.
      Sending of a technical project to DENATRAN - DEPARTAMENTO NACIONAL DE TRÂNSITO (Brazilian National Department of Traffic) in January 1997.
