CONSEQUENCES
OF A COLLISION WITH A HIGHER UNDERRIDE GUARD
|
THIS PHOTO SHOWS THE TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES
OF A COLLISION WITH AN UNDERRIDE GUARD PLACED ABOVE THE FRONTAL BUMPER
OF A GM BLAZER STATION WAGON.
|
AS IS CLEAR, THE BLAZER BUMPER WAS NOT
DAMAGED BY THE COLLISION! BUT THE TRUCK GUARD PUSHED THE MOTOR BLOCK BACKWARDS,
CAUSING CONSIDERABLE DEFORMATION. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE TRUCK CARGO TRAY
HIT THE WINDSHIELD OF THE STATION WAGON, CAUSING HEAD INJURIES TO THE DRIVER.
|
THE STEERING WHEEL, PUSHED BACK BY THE
COLUMN, BROKE THE DRIVERS LEG. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO OTHER OCCUPANT
ON THE FRONT SEAT. OTHERWISE INJURIES TO BOTH OF HIS LEGS WOULD HAVE BEEN
SEVERE. THE WINDSHIELD WAS BROKEN BY THE CARGO TRAY, AND PASSENGER COMPARTMENT
INTRUSION WAS LIMITED BY INSUFFICIENT COLLISION SPEED AND/OR BY SOME VALUE
OF GUARD STRENGTH. CONCLUSION: TYPICAL CASE OF HALF SAFETY.
