    FIRST UNDERRIDE GUARD DESIGNED BY THE IMPACT PROJECT TEAM: THE ARTICULATED GUARD
    GUARD FEATURES:
  • Height from the ground: 400 mm (15.7 inches)
  • Mounted flush with the rear end of the truck bed
  • Design loads:
  • P1 = P3 = 100 kN
  • P2 = 150 kN
  • Material: SAE 1020 steel
  • A - Main beam (from a 5 mm steel sheet);
    B - Lateral supports (7 mm steel sheet);
    C - Angle braces (tubular 100X45X5 mm beams);
    D - Reinforcement (tubular 100X45X5 mm beam);
    E - Drop arms (U 98X58X8 mm beams);
    F - Articulations (diameter 30 mm);
    G - Truck chassis beams.
    Cross section of the guard main beam (A): Detail of the pins and stop used to restrain the guard displacement during an impact:

    The articulated guard moves upwards and backwards  when hitting a ground obstacle

    SUCCESSFULLY TESTED!

    To make its widespread use easier, the articulated guard was not object of any patent requirement.

    ALL DETAILS CAN BE FOUND IN SAE TECHNICAL PAPER 973106

    We are grateful to CENAPAD/SP (National Center for High Performance Computing in São Paulo) for granting its computational resources, which were used for designing the articulated underride guard.
